As part of my strange string of making valentines for nerds/geeks (IE my horde of Dragon Age ones) I asked for suggestions and my friend Monica threw out the idea for a Lovecraftian one.
An idea hatched in my brain and out of it strode this:
Pretty simple idea, terrifying tentacled god wishing you to be his or face the some not very nice wrath. I, like most of my wacky ideas put it on my Deviant Art page expecting it to wallow in obscurity again like all of my wacky ideas.
For the most part I was right until I woke up this morning to find a comment left on my Cthulhu Valentine:
"You might dig this
[link]"
Oh goodie, early morning viruses. But wait, I hover my cursor over and see that it's none other than an Etsy link. Okay, Cthulhu getting mad now.
I click it and lo and behold the thing in a fairly sparse shop has already sold. And oh look so did another one two days before. Which means this person decided to search for anything Cthulhu on either all of Deviant Art (or possible google) and leave a link to their little plush toy all over the damn place.
THIS CONCEPT OF SPAM CONFUSES AND INFURIATES US!
People plead ignorance when it comes to self promotion, yes you can share things you make sparsely and surrounded with something helpful or in a fan opt in community. Do not go around posting links to your stupid little store wherever you see a vague mention of something that you think applies. You might get a few sales but numerous other people will hate you and tell others.
Yo.
This is also why Etsy links have been banned all across the internet leading shop owners to try and find creative ways around it.
But if you really want your own cuddly Cthulhu I have a much better recommendation over the fleece spam I got.
Cthulhu Chick has crocheted adorable monsters in whatever color you can think of:
If I wasn't certain that anything plush coming into this house would die a quick death at Essies paw I'd get this little guy:
Spam - bad/ Crocheted Cthulhu - good.

Tw' iter - part 4
After discovering a give us $40 and we'll inert your name and a few traits into a book thing I got a wild and crazy idea to write my own oh we'll call it story and instead of inserting just myself and my eye color (blech) I shall use all of my various twitter friends in some for or capacity. This is what follows.

Menacing doors passed on both sides as Steph lead the terrified group down a narrow hallway that kept curving in on itself like an ouroboros that got a bit confused and tried to eat its midsection first.
“Didn’t we already pass the ‘Danger Tiger Eating Men’ sign?” Pearl asked, shuffling in the middle of the group. Devtony took up the rear under the pretense of guarding them should anything really big and scary try and outflank them. In reality he was hoping for a chance to bolt once everyone’s back was turned but every time he slid back a step Pearl would follow suit. She must have eyes in the back of that cloak, he mumbled before reminding himself that there was a very good chance she did and possibly on the balls of her feet. The universe was a very strange place and had its own laws when it came to biology.
“Not much further, around the ‘DM’s to Nowhere lab’ and past the ‘Something bad has happened’ lounge,” Steph had her ‘everything’s perfectly cool, no reason for the authorities to watch me’ walk on which could only mean some really bad shit was about to go down.
Hellena bounced beside her, grinning from ear to ear. This was a lot better than sitting in some tree blind waiting for another ship full of men to land so they could have another raid party. She had high hopes it would even top the bunga bunga after. “So what does a space station need with a Whale department anyway?”
Devtony and Steph paused panic on their faces before both started yelling out, “I didn’t here anything about a Pail. Why would you want a rail? Does anyone have my gel? I could really use a trail.”
In a clutch of panic and visions of nets in his eyes Devtony kept calling out everything that rhymed with whale as Steph pulled Hellena to her side, well nudged nicely she knew how much damage that sword could do all to intimately and whispered “Do. Not. Use. The. W. Word.”
“What W word?”
“The one that sounds like a cry.”
She furrowed her brow trying to go back over what she said, “Oh, you mean . . . gotcha. Why?”
“You don’t want to know. I think we’re in the clear, I don’t hear any wings flapping.” Steph paused putting her ear to the wall, “yep it missed us.”
Pearl stepped forward, “Are we getting close to this forum?”
“What? Oh yeah we passed it back there, it’s through every door on the right.”
The group started at her, “You mean we could have just walked in all the way back by the lift.”
“Well yes and no, look you’ll see,” she slipped off her glove and pressed her palm against a small panel and a voice quite a bit like MoCoddle read out “HELLO USER @STEPHAROONI, PLEASE ENTER” and out spit a small card with a strange symbol on it.
“Come on, come on we don’t have all day, get your hash tag so we can get in.”
Pearl and Devtony exchanged a look, he shrugged he had no idea what a hash tag was – sounded spicy. Hellena, never one to back down from a small box on the wall wiped her hand off on the small bits of fabric she wore and made contact. “HELLO USER @HELLENAHEAVENLY, PLEASE ENTER,” she grabbed her hash tag grinning. “It looks like a game board. Ooh are we gonna play . . .”
“Tic Tac Toe? No.” Steph butted in.
“You call it Tic Tac Toe? I only knew it as Eye, Tooth, Toe. Huh, this place is backwards.”
“Well, we don’t have all day.” Shrugging Pearl and then Devtony both placed their hands and received their own hashtags. The bounty hunter turned his over and over trying to figure out what the small sheet was good for.
MoCoddle having processed her newest best friends grinned and with a smirk opened up the door to Level 500 Forum – or as it was known throughout the rest of the station ClusterFuck #1.
They all, even Steph who spent most of her illegal life inside one of the ClusterFucks, gasped (they were going to run out of oxygen at this rate) at the mass of life ringed around a huge stage where a distant spec stood his words magnified back through the loudspeakers “And I say we didn’t not try not hard enough!” People, so many people, all the people not out in the corridors stood there a few patiently and most not so patiently waiting in a huge eternal twisting line to get up to the platform. Barriers in the form of velvet ropes were erected keeping each coil of the line separate though a few amorous souls would jump when the mood striked.
Where a gap formed, generally from someone vacating the premises so to speak a business or two would spring up. There were small booths selling every kind of ware imaginable and some most would rather not think of. Life was lived in the line, babies were born near routes 35, 56, or 150 depending on how long one waited. Bathrooms were the first business ventures established. Level 500 was proud to boast a pay toilet once every 50 people. But of course those who lived in the line had no way to earn coin so the entire line economy was based upon trade for goods and services.
This was where a smuggler thrived, guards were forced through the line and could be avoided easily enough if you had the right numbers or were really good at ducking under legs and people forced to mingle and wait were willing to try anything to get their minds off it. Business had been booming for Steph as she turned to her terrified compatriots, who looked like they were about to need one of those much boasted toilets. “Welcome to the forums. Now quick get in line before someone takes your spot.”
The human urge to beat out their neighbor over rode any sense that this was an incredibly stupid idea and Pearl followed by Hellena and Devtony fell into line behind the swirling masses. “What is this place?” Pearl asked Steph who started to disrobe out of her sterile garb, leaving a rather dashing young woman in a curious adventurer’s outfit behind (the fedora was a bit much).
“It’s the forums, I thought everyone knew about the forums.”
“I’m from . . . out of town. I don’t understand why is everyone standing in this line?”
Steph paused as she dug through her pack for the ceremonial whip (a must for all smugglers), “You know, I’m not sure. It’s just what everyone does.”
“So you all get in line for something but you have no idea what lies at the end?” Truly these people were baffling.
“Yeah, exciting isn’t it?”
The line moved surprisingly quickly for the large masses, the same voice still droning on from the center stage. This was not due to people finally reaching their lauded end but a trick of engineering and the use of wormholes to put those at the front back to the end. A bit of space sickness from the trip kept the travelers confused enough they never noticed.
Pearl and Steph were locked in conversation, arguing over the point of it all. Hellena turned to Devtony, “Whatcha think’s at the end?”
The giant looked up easily over most of the heads and placed a hand over his eyes, “Looks like a stage surrounded by barriers.”
“Oh, like a ring. You think there might be some wrestling?” The joy on her face belied the terror that the bounty hunter was certain must be somewhere in the Amazonian. The idea that she actually enjoyed getting into danger wasn’t a possibility.
He looked up again, willing his eyesight to get better but when he turned back Hellena was talking to a strange man with a pumpkin on his head. “Hi, I’m Hellena. I have no idea what I’m doing here.”
“Mmph mmmphh fump (translated as ‘I am pumpkinsam and I am standing in this line with a pumpkin on my head’).”
Devtony shrugged his shoulders his footsteps slowing to a crawl, he let a few of the people behind him pass by. This was turning into a mad goose chase and he was in no mood to be the remaining loon. Maybe he could talk his way into the lift without Steph’s card and . . . and get vaporized two seconds in.
“Hello dearie, you seem lost.” The bounty hunter turned around searching for the grandmotherly voice, “Down here, you big stupid . . . dear.” The voice changed for a second becoming harder and younger only to have the syrup poured on extra thick. A woman, well what was probably a woman, doing her best to appear as a crone right down to the fake nose and warts that kept slipping off blinked up at him. She had a small stand set up, nothing more than a few curious knick-knacks surrounding her. “You are the Tony yes, once known as Splutnik.”
“How did you,” Devtony started, “Not even my parents knew that!” Then again what his parents knew could fit into a thimble for a pixie.
“Come,” she waved her hands pulling him into her web, “you must take this,” and with almost no force placed a strange looking fruit into his palm. It was brown and probably half dead covered in spines that poked into his flesh.
“I really don’t think I . . .”
“You take, trust in Rebis-AZ. I never let you down.” The woman winked, causing her nose to slide down and drop to the floor. She scurried down looking for it, just then Pearl appeared looking as mad as a porcelain mask can, “We were looking all over for you.”
“Really?”
“Well actually not, it’s surprisingly hard to hide here. What’s that in your hand?”
Devtony looked back towards where the old/young woman had been, now only a crowd of teenagers talking animatedly about a singing beaver in her place. “I have no idea,” and hurled the strange fruit deep into the heart of the crowd.
The pair got back to the place Hellena had been saving for them, noticeably absent was one woman who carried their only way back home “Steph’s gone.”
“What do you mean, Steph’s gone?”
“She said to stay here and that she’d be back,” Hellena smiled once again reminding the panicking pair who was carrying the giant weapons.
Devtony and Pearl exchanged a look and trapped in this strange place no one to get them out and with no idea what else to do sat down on the side of the line letting people pass them. The Amazonian was in the mood to sight see and with the prodigious use of the threat of the giant sword on her back got some people to act as the bottom of a pyramid.
“Wow this place is amazing. There’s a huge board lining all along the wall that keeps flashing small messages.”
Devtony snorted, in no mood to play along. He was beginning to overheat surrounded by all these people. He thought about taking his coat(s) off but didn’t like the looks of anyone else with their thieving hands of thievery. Pearl responded, “What do they say?”
“Mostly gibberish. M-t-n-b-k-e Hey look at me I’m eating a sandwich, Smarmy Jerkface – my sandwich is better than your sandwich. There’s an awful lot of sandwich talk for some reason. Perhaps there’s a Subway in the middle. I hope so, I could kill for a club.” At the words kills and club the pyramid scattered back into the fold figuring that dealing with stern looks and muttered words from fellow patrons were better than the Amazonian.
Pearl turned from Hellena who managed a perfect dismount from atop a pile of squirming bipeds hell bent on getting far away to look at the pile struggling to breathe beside her, “Oh my NerfHerders!”
Hellena turned to see her new best friend slumped over, his skin an unsightly shade of green with a strange white goo foaming over his eyes and mouth. He turned a bit at the masks cry but could only make out strange shapes as the world around him melted into a grilled cheese sandwich. The last of his energy drained and the giant plowed forward crashing on his face and stopping up the line.
The Amazonian gritted her teeth, at last a bit of action, and as Pearl yelled for a Doctor Hellena picked the slowly cannibalizing himself Devtony up onto her shoulders. “Which way to a doctor?”
“I have no idea, all I see are people!” Pearl scattered, trying to be heard over the din of whoever’s thoughts were being blasted across the vast space. “Doctor? Is anyone a Doctor! Surely someone is a Doctor?”
Hellena, sensing a bit of fun and using the unconscious giant as a battering ram plowed through the line in record time. Pearl ran behind offering platitudes as she went.
“I’m so sorry, yes please excuse us, our friend is very sick. We’ll make it up to you.”
This was taking too long though, the barriers made sure the line which seemed immensely long to the observer was actually infinite times bigger. “Bugger it!” she yelled turning from the people waiting in line and took to bashing down the barriers with her best friend.
He was unaware of anything going on around him and kept mumbling, “But I don’t want to go to the asteroid belt today mother.”
Line Authorities would have butted in and stopped the group making a dash for the center ring if they hadn’t of all died out about 300 years ago when their uniforms all malfunctioned and played a continuous loop of “It’s a Small World After All” on high speed. No one ever bothered to replace them and the place had been self serve ever since. People left in the wake broke from whatever spell the velvet ropes put them under and began to mob behind the dashing Amazonian making their own break for what they believed was freedom.
“I think I can see the podium!” Hellena yelled back to Pearl who was hot on her heels. Except there was an unexpected problem, unnoticed all these centuries by the swarm, the fact was the eternal line and simple barriers had no connection to the center ring at all. It was barricaded on all sides so none of the riff raff could get near the microphone.
“Bloody Hell!” This is going to hurt, Hellena thought and with all her strength tossed the giant high into the air and in one fast move pulled off her sword and sliced a hole through the chicken wire circling the stage.
“Hellena, that was amazing,” Pearl said.
“I know, right,” the Amazonian pulled back on the wire so the masked woman could slip through completely forgetting the giant still in the air. He hit the ground with a thud that knocked the other line patrons off their feet. Luckily his head cushioned the fall. “Oopsie, Daisy,” she picked him up again and made for the strange arena.
Pearl was ahead of her, looking furiously for someone in charge but no one was there. Only a chair sat upon the stage near the microphone with a small puppet near it that was surprisingly familiar. She looked towards Hellena who was getting a bit tired of the load and set him down on the stage with a hard crack.
The women approached the microphone. Hellena picked it up and handed it to Pearl. She pushed her mask back and cleared her throat, “Excuse me,” her voice echoed back across the mass of people, “I say, excuse me but is there a doctor in the house.”
Much as someone who spent their entire life near a highway suddenly moves to the country every ear turned and mouth silenced as the constant hum of the voice changed becoming higher and softer. Pearl swallowed again, the crushing weight of attention full upon her, “Our friend is very sick.”
Hellena, her focus on the hole she made and the mass of arms and legs fighting through it called out, “Uh you might want to hurry up, we’re gonna have a lot of company soon,” she looked at Pearl and the chair beside her, “Hey isn’t that Mr WordsWorth?”
“Is anyone here a doctor?!”
A flash of purple light blinded everyone on the stage (which was getting rather crowded quickly) and a man dressed in a strange blue jumpsuit walked through, “I’m a Doctor.”
“Doctor who?”
“Hu actually,” he said slipping a small disc onto his patient.
“What?” Pearl was getting tired of this game.
“No time, take this,” he placed a disc in her hand and one in Hellena’s, “This is gonna get a bit bumpy, try not to throw up.”
The mob broken from whatever spell the new voice had began a resurgence towards the microphone, their holy grail of a wasted life. Doctor Hu smiled and with a quick wave to everyone on queue pushed a small button on his suit and the entire group vanished in the purple haze.
People crashed into people as all of level 500 converged in one giant pile of limbs.

Restaurant Impossible
When I first moved back to my college town and spent a month and a half with a few still in college students who were slightly crazier than me (the wildest thing we did was steal a bunch of poop bags from a dog park on her old apartment) I got my first taste of BBC America programming and their love affair with Gordon Ramsay, specifically his Kitchen Nightmares.
The original episodes are a small twinkle of what Fox bought up and Americanized with lots of money sunk into redecorating, more bleeps per minute and a few donkey's for good measure. In the British version they focused more on getting to the deep problems of the restaurant showing how to get faith back from the public and even sent Ramsay back one, two sometimes even six months later to see how and if things changed.
I bring all this up because Food Network, having run out of cake challenges involving giant sugar sculptures that can fly has decided to throw their hat into the Restaurant Makeover ring.
A few years back, though it may have been a fevered dream, showing in the dead zone of tv programming my husband and I caught what we thought would be Food Networks first attempt to make Kitchen Nightmares their own. They had Bobby Flay air dropped into a pizza place in NYC, give a few pointless bits of advice, load everyone on a bus and send them on a field trip around to see other successful New York restaurants. It all ended with a reopening party where they didn't even serve the public and Flay was on screen for a total of 10 minutes.
We never saw another episode, figuring that FN had realized the error of their ways but given time and an uncreative head of programming here comes Robert Irvine their favorite resume fabricator and his Impossible crew.
I've seen two episodes of this strange half mutated bastard version so far and it's leaving a rather rotten taste in my mouth.
It starts out much like any Kitchen Nightmare, a British chef appears like magic in some strange hole in the wall, tastes the nasty food, digs through the kitchen and shuts everything down. (A big addition from the Americanization - very rarely did Ramsay shut any kitchens down in his British Nightmare) And because it's Robert he pulls out his giant memo pad and set of markers to get to work. This is where the show starts to go completely off the rails.
Food Network and HGTV are both owned by the same parent company. Generally the seams are kept mostly in check, you'll see Sandra Lee trying to design curtains for a holiday show occasionally but little to no more crossovers, but with Restaurant Impossible they found a chance to kill two networks with one stone.
Traveling with Robert is a woman named Tanya (or with his accent Irvine calls "Tanner") ripped from Designed to Sell who takes $10,000 and a horde of lackeys to turn a condemned hell hole into what looks like a restaurant designed for kindergartners with crazy crap they found on the roof and patio nailed to the wall. (Because it makes so much sense to have a chef who doesn't own any restaurants and a woman who doesn't design for any restaurants giving a failing one a complete makeover.)
When not fussing over design patterns or wall colors Irvine takes a few minutes to "teach" the owner/chef/who the hell cares how to make a few recipes. These have been frankly rather dull offerings such as brisket and crab cakes (I still have no idea who thinks ooh BBQ and seafood in the same place. Sign me up!), pizza and Bolognese Sauce. Funny, because last I checked a few new recipes does not a restaurant make.
Love him or hate him, you can't argue that Ramsay is one hell of a chef and his mantra of respecting the ingredients works well regardless of what level of skill the head cook has. He also takes time and will talk finance with the managers/owners as someone who has opened and also had fail tens of restaurants.
I'm sure Irvine would ask how in the hole the owners on his show are but he's too busy worrying about whether a wall will hide a soda machine or not (though come to think of it has Irvine owned any restaurants? Well ones he didn't make up in his head at least).
All of this focus on design and shock factor - Seriously the crab shack last night was so bad there were sixteen dead mice trapped under a fridge - means that the reopening, the entire point of it all is on screen for 5 minutes tops. You get a few shots of people saying food is good (because people will say anything if it gets them on TV) and Robert gently encouraging from the kitchen.
And then the credits roll.
It's like someone crashed Trading Spaces into an episode of Dinner Impossible and a rotten can of mushrooms. No one gives a shit about the people they filmed, changed around their dining space then left with a still failing business in a horrible economy. Who cares when there's a butt ugly steak house stuck in the 80's two states over they can sick Tanner on.
Oh Food Network, you tried to take Kitchen Nightmares and remove the venom to fit your family friendly idiom and sucked out all the heart instead. No one seems invested in anything outside the paycheck and challenge and it shows.
I wish I could say I won't be tuning in anymore but I'm fast running out of background channels (damn you History - you should cal yourselves Discover II and be done with it) so it may slip on every now and again but I won't hold any fond memories for Restaurant Impossible and I rather doubt it will for anyone else.

Post 1,000!
As you may have noticed I seem to be on a blogging streak as I post together the story currently falling from my fingers but I wanted to pause for a moment because this is my 1,000th post!
Drop the balloons!
Do de do . . . *looks at watch*
Okay so we didn't get any balloons, well what about party favors. You have to have some party favors. I wanna run around screaming You get a boat, you get a boat, everybody is getting a boat.
So what do we have? *whispers off stage* Oh you have got to be kidding:
To celebrate my 1,000th post I present from 1935 golden hollywood La Fiesta de Santa Barbara.
It's a fiesta which comes from the mexican word fiesta with means fiesta.
Last night while I was whittling away on my keyboard and my husband was probably killing ROUS's on his he flipped to Turner Classic Movies which in the background played an old 30's movie about Henry VIII - which was far more historically accurate than the Tudors (this Herny actually got fat and old before dying).
As the show was winding down (and the host who always reminds me of a slightly more cryptic Mr. Rogers went on about the next movie - it was Henry VIII night I guess) I turned off my word processor and curled up on the couch only to have the most insane thing I have ever seen at the 9:38 hour start up.
From the era when studios owned all of their actors souls and would occasionally dress them up and parade them around like school children - La Fiesta De Santa Barbara follows such greats as Judy Garland, Gary Cooper, Buster Keton and Harpo Marx as they play along with deadness in their eyes to the insane nonplot of a fiesta (which they explain in excruciating detail over and over). At one point to make sure and remind any Mexicans who won the war a bunch of cowboys show up and then because that wasn't confusing enough there's some strange subplot about a plains native american and of course oh look a papoose joke.
Realizing they wandered too far off the mark they turn back to the fiesta by bringing in Bull fighters. Cual? Oh I'm sorry bull throwers. This boils down to two comedians phoning it in by standing around next to a guy in a cow costume who talks like Mickey Mouse.
El Guapo shows up, shoots a few people but it's okay because he's actually Italian. In fact just about all the "mexicans" are Italian including someone dressed up like The Godfather.
As everything in the golden era it all ends with a song and dance number complete with a trashed Ballerina getting on top of the table dancing to La Cucaracha en pointe. It's a giant bowl of wackiness, nonplot and good old racisim that only the 30's can provide.
And now I share it with you.
Happy 1,000!

Tw' iter - part 3
After discovering a give us $40 and we'll inert your name and a few traits into a book thing I got a wild and crazy idea to write my own oh we'll call it story and instead of inserting just myself and my eye color (blech) I shall use all of my various twitter friends in some for or capacity. This is what follows.
Part 1- here
Part 2 -here
Part 3 -here
Part 4 -here
Part 5 -here
Part 6 -here
Part 7 -here
The ever expanding group approached the surprisingly unguarded lift, one of the rare ones that was still in working order and mostly maintained. There were of course abandoned elevators, escalators and giant open pits littered across each floor so someone without the right FC could slip down to where they weren’t supposed to be but it usually ended in death from either a downed wire, a bounty hunter with cold feet or gravity. Only one lift was sanctioned by whatever half sentient force ran Tw’ iter and it didn’t need any guards.

Devtony paused at the doors, taking a deep breath and repeating a calming phrase he’d learned from his grandfather who spent his days licking the walls, its exact meaning lost to the annals of time, “Meow meow meow meow, meow meow meow meow.”
“Wow, is that a Straight in the Arm two handed bastard sword? And you went with the gold overlay, good choice the silver had no balance,” the giant walking haz mat suit known as Steph asked the Amazonian.
“Uh, sure, I think,” Hellena shrugged, the coveted sword rolling between her terrifying muscles, “You know a lot about weapons?”
“Oh only collector’s pieces, mostly stuff that hangs on walls and gathers dust until you need to get rid of a rich uncle. I used to do a bit of freelance work before this job.”
The woman behind the porcelain mask slowed, she’d followed behind the strange group at a distance for fear she might run into one of them on accident. Her people might be excellent craftsmen but they didn’t think much of depth perception. Now the tall one, the bounty hunter, was rubbing his temples and murmuring something about “Wassup” over and over as the other women argued over the best price for crossbow strings. Well this was her quest after all, she pulled her cloak in tight and brushed past all those assembled and walked into the open lift.
“WAIT!” Steph yelled dashing forward with Hellena plowing into the back of Devtony pushing him into the rather roomy pristine white box. In a station full of grime, dirt and life teeming over every surface it seemed strange that this remained untouched. As the last bits of the bounty hunter passed across the threshold the door whished shut trapping them all.
“Oh bugger, now where’d I put that damn card again?” Steph ripped off her glove turning it inside out and stowing it safely before routing through her pockets.
A panel on the side lowered and a large glowing face appeared. It was half yellow and half green like a crazed Packer’s fan. “Hello. Welcome to the Transit System I Am MoCoddle. I Am Here to Make Sure Your Trip Is A Pleasant One. Please Present Your FollowerCount,” the voice, which echoed back in thirty different languages, sounded strangely alive for being a robot.
Pearl turned from the MoCoddle to look at her companions, “What a strange little box . . .” the thought died on her tongue as the bounty hunter and the Steph patted themselves and then each other down in a mad search to find her piece of paper.
“WHERE DID YOU PUT IT LAST?!” Devtony screamed at her, turning all of his pockets out for a third time.
“I DON’T KNOW!” Steph yelled back, “DON’T YOU THINK I’D TELL YOU IF I DID!”
MoCoddle, having finished her first pass of all the galactic recognized languages was on to the next paragraph, “Please Present Your Designated FollowerCount. If You Do Not Have The Correct FollowerCount You Will Be Forced To Leave The Transit System.”
“IS IT IN MY HAIR?” Steph yelled ripping her green hair scarf off and shaking her face beneath a mess of blonde hair.
“IS IT IN MINE?” Devtony followed suit fear consuming whatever few brain cells he had left to rub together.
Hellena, bemused by the party shook her own hair upside down, “Hey, this is fun.”
Pearl put up her hands, “I don’t understand . . .”
Before she could continue MoCoddle piped back up with her final warning. “Please Present Your FollowerCount Now. If You Do Not You Will Be Forced To Leave The Transit System.” A strange whirring sound filled the mad lift as panels moved back and laser weapons descended upon the denizens. “If You Do Not Have The Proper FollowerCount You Will Be Vaporized. Veuillez présenter votre compte de disciple maintenant. . . .”
“Um . . .” Pearl started, her hands slipping into her cloak.
Steph had one of her booties off and was digging through the other while Devtony was half naked and working his way to whole. Hellena still not certain what was going on was patting each of them on the head to a tune she hummed under her breath. The tension and fear were so palpable the little cleaning bots were about to kick in before all the bodies were disposed of.
As MoCoddle was rounding up on the last bits of her final dialogue “Click Click Clack Clack Click Click . . .” something hard beneath Pearl’s folds bent under her fingers. Ah ha! She freed Steph’s FC card uncertain of how she got it in the first place. The Yellow/Green face paused mid Clack as a laser burst through her forehead and scanned the card.
Everyone paused, watching the death beams through held breath. “Accepted, You May Travel Down To Level 500. Where Would You Wish To Go?”
“Um, 500. If you would be so kind, woah!” Pearl mumbled softly, the threat of vaporization lifting as the panels slid back and the lift started up gaining speed that thanks to dampers the inhabitants didn’t feel. Instead they each slowly got dressed doing their best to not make eye contact. Hellena kept whistling her tune under her breath.
“Arriving at Level 500,” MoCoddle chimed, a smirk in her voice. She loved this job, “Please Mind Your Heads. Thank You For Traveling With The Transit System. Have a Nice Day.”
“Yeah, right,” Devtony mumbled as he realized he laced his boots up on the wrong feet.
The doors opened to Level 500, and all except Steph gasped in astonishment. All the higher levels looked well as one would assume when every manner of species regardless of proclivity to cleanliness or orderliness is dumped into a small place together and never allowed to leave. It was a wonder the floors weren’t covered in blood, though come to think of it they were always rather sticky.
But Level 500 was immaculate, white on white on white. You could confidently lick the floors, the walls and the ceiling without having to worry about updating your will. It looked like it fell out of a computer commercial.
A few personnel walked past the lift their noses buried in clipboards wearing the same strange garb Steph appeared in. “Welcome to the Virus Zone,” she announced slipping her hair back into place beneath the green hat.
“The . . . The virus zone?!” Devtony gasped and then lest he leave his lungs open to another attack vowed to stop breathing the entire time they were up there. He lasted a half a minute.
“Yep, where all of the best viruses are both discovered and then cured. It’s also a gold mine for smugglers . . . or so I hear,” she winked lest the others be as slow as she heard the upper decks were.
Pearl snuggled deeper into her protective mask and clothing, “And where would we find someone who could take us even lower?”
“Oh . . . you’ll want the forum,” Steph touched one of the walls and brought up the clock which was for some reason counting down instead of up, “which should be starting in a few minutes.” Another hand appeared next to hers, turning the clock into a series of circuit diagrams.
“Hello, hello, hello!” the woman smiled wide at Steph, her voice zipping into super sonic speeds, “What are you all doing here? A bit of exploring, oh yes I know how that goes.” She, unlike everyone else who was supposed to be on the Virus level wasn’t dressed in sterile garb favoring instead a long brown suit and bright red suspenders.
“Who are you?” Steph asked, concerned someone else was muscling in on her territory.
“I’m the Geek, well the Geeky to my friends. And I bet we’re going to be friends,” she turned her attention to the rest of the party, at the sight of Devtony she called out, “Oh nice coat, I should get one in brown.”
“I’m sorry, you’re the Geeky?” Pearl asked, her knowledge of human names was rudimentary but something about this seemed wrong, “Just that?”
“No, you’re not doing it right,” she yelled. The woman extricated a small tool from her pocked and waved it at the panel, which now showed old black and white cartoons from the thirties that all space people seemed to love watching.
“Beg pardon.”
“You say, Geeky Who and I say, well I say actually that’s not right it’s Geeky Mae but I’m still trying to work the Who in.”
“And you’re wearing a bowtie.”
“Yeah, bowties are cool. It seems as though you are all here looking for something or someone, only strangers come to level 500 without all of that rather drab lab stuff,” she motioned to Steph who crossed her arms, “so I can’t help but wonder what is it that you need?”
Hellena having finished her song butted in, “We’re trying to get to Level 1.”
Everyone shot her daggers but she ignored it, this geeky who seemed like a lot of fun. The woman pulled out her tool again and made an ungodly noise shining a green light upon the Amazonian, “I see . . . well it just so happens I can help you. I am, in fact, in possession of the only papers that can get anyone to Level 1,” she whipped out a small black book and flipped it open flashing it to everyone.
Excited murmurs gave way to gawking stares in the group.
“Oh well, I . . .”
“Bloody hell, the damn thing’s blank!” Devtony roared, his small hopes of going home in one piece before the last call dashed. Though come to think of it he had yet to actually see a last call.
The strange woman cocked her head and turned the paper towards her, shaking it up and down a bit, “Hm, it must be stuck or I’m getting some interference from a weather balloon again.”
Still shaking the paper a bit she parted the group and walked into the killer lift, pulling out her strange noise tool for one last wave before the doors closed on her. The group heared a muffled MoCoddle start up “Hello. Welcome to the Transit System I Am MoCoddle. I Am Here to Make Sure Your Trip Is A Pleasant One. . . “
Followed by that strange tool whirring noise and then nothing.
Pearl said a silent prayer for whoever that strange woman was and the atoms she now inhabited and turned towards Steph who was hoping back and forth uneasy to be standing in one place for so long. “Lead us to the forum.”
